Family Wellness Tips for Traveling with Kids

Traveling with children is a chance to share some incredible new adventures and make some memories as a family. As good as the good times are when you throw in new surroundings, different foods, changes in temperature and kids out of routine the meltdowns can soon come thick and fast. Ensuring the wellness of our families during our adventures is a top priority as lets face it things can soon descend into chaos when we don't prioritize it and that applies to us adults just as much as the children.. To help make your next family trip a breeze, here are some essential wellness tips for traveling with kids.

First and foremost, planning ahead is key. Research your destination to know what amenities and facilities are available for families. This will help you pack accordingly and make necessary arrangements. This even applies for places like airports if you have layovers or long waits and also during flights. Ensuring you have colouring books and Ipads with films downloaded can really make the difference between you having a calm journey or complete stress!

Another important tip is to prioritize sleep. Traveling can disrupt routines, so try to stick to your child's sleep schedule as much as possible. Bring familiar items like blankets or stuffed animals to help them feel more at ease in a new environment. Even as adults unfamiliar surroundings and jet lag can seriously cause disruption for sleep routines but for children they are bound to have additional nerves and worries trying to settle to sleep in new environments. Often an afternoon nap after a day on the beach or around the pool can benefit even Mum and Dad too!

Staying active during your trip is also crucial for family wellness. Look for family-friendly activities like nature walks, bike rides, or swimming to keep everyone moving and engaged. We always like to ensure the kids are going to get time in the pool or in the sea each day on the holiday. We also love sunrise and sunset walks to get us all in a calm mindset for the day/evening ahead and as a bonus the weather is usually much cooler during these times of day.

Nutrition plays a significant role in wellness, especially while traveling. As much as its easy to have convenience food during holidays with the added lack of sleep and temperature changes good nutrition is really important to help keep everyone's energy and moods in check. Pack healthy snacks and drinks to keep hunger at bay and avoid sugary treats that can lead to energy crashes. Hot weather mixed with kids on a comedown is far from ideal. Research local restaurants that offer nutritious options for the whole family. I always find my children are much more interested in fruit on holidays as everything looks much more exciting. They also seem much more eager to try new foods, I understand many children are not and at the end of the day as parents all we can do is our best and fed children is better than hungry children.

It's essential to stay hydrated while traveling, especially when spending time outdoors or in warm climates. Encourage your kids to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay refreshed and energized. When my kids start getting cranky particularly in the afternoon, getting them hydrated is one of my first port of calls and helps change things pretty quickly.

Don't over book yourself. Sometimes when we are away it is so tempting to get out and experience everything a new destination has to offer especially when you have been looking forward to it and researching what is on offer where you are staying. The only trouble with this it really quickly leads to burn out if you have busy plans every day. Ensuring a few days a week of the holiday are more quiet, relaxing days gives everyone a chance to recuperate.

Lastly, don't forget to take care of your own wellness as well. Parenting can be exhausting, so make sure to carve out time for self-care during your trip. Whether it's a relaxing bath, a quiet moment with a book, or a quick solo walk, prioritizing your own well-being will benefit the entire family. On our recent trip my husband and myself would often take it in turns so he would play in the pool with the children while I relaxed with a book then later on he would go and have some time to himself in return.

I hope by incorporating these wellness tips into your family travels, you can create unforgettable memories while keeping your loved ones healthy and happy.
